Who are the mermaids? What is their world?

Mermaids are mythical, powerful legendary creatures. In folklore, a mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. They often appear with an enchanting voice and elegant form, adorning themselves with seashells, pearls, and seaweeds. They live in wild seashores and waters and can be seen only if they chose to. Once you hear their song you will be enchanted forever.

Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings. In other folk traditions (or sometimes within the same traditions), they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans. Our mermaids are of the beneficent variety—they hold the magic to heal. It is this helpful, healing prowess and
the mindset that first brought herbal medicine to mankind.

Deep in the enchanted coral reefs of the drowned island of Atlantis, the mermaids cultivated medicinal herbs in vast nurseries and forgotten gardens. The mermaids first filled the herbs with healing powers and ancient wisdom and then planted them in the soil above, on nights of a full moon, for therapeutic use by humans.

The herbal plants are what link us, humans, to the mermaid’s magic. With their gifts, we gain the power to heal and protect ourselves, and to maintain a close bond with nature. We humans have grown so much apart from nature, magic, and one another. These elements are crucial for our well-being, and the healing power of these mermaid plants helps us to restore these connections.

My work is crafted from separate elements that when combined tell a singular story, describe and evoke a feeling.

By creating a specific composition I can explain a very specific thought or an exact emotional situation I had in mind.

I find it very interesting to describe emotional situations.
The technique I usually work with is called digital collage.

It allows me to create Surreal worlds or snapshots of an imaginary scene, bringing together ready-made images with images I create myself.

I’m especially interested in plants, if you understand them then you got it all.

Currently living in Tel Aviv with my two sons, my beloved partner, and a very sensitive dog.

How and why, I made these mermaids?

From the artist

I love plants and nature more than anything in this world.

I love creating art more than anything in the world.

I feel it’s a mission of mine to bring us humans closer to plants, a step closer and even further than a step.

As a child, I grew up in the hills near Jerusalem, surrounded by pines, sage, hyssop, and Pistacia lentiscus, voices of birds, and the smell of the flora under my bare feet.

My grandmother Maria was the gardener of our beautiful garden (and surely had a shamanic spirit), took me by the hand and brought me close to the earth, the leaves and birds and tiny creatures living on it.

She taught me how to listen to the trees, to smell the flowers and wind, how to identify the voices and language of birds, and how mother earth speaks to us all the time with her endless different voices, and we just need to listen.

I grew up feeling that I was a part of this system, a single leaf of the tree.

And here I am today- doing my best through art, trying to pass on as accurately as I can this ancient language my grandmother taught me, who herself was taught by her elders that passed this wisdom from generations back, a chain of wisdom and love through generations of wise women.

I use my handmade illustrations and photographs I take, and I love using botanical illustrations from centuries ago. I grew up with these illustrations around me, in books my grandparents brought from their home in Europe. Today you can search specific illustrations of plants in online free domain scans of these treasures. Sometimes it takes hours to find the specific plant I want to work with, and I get to learn all the time new facts and new species.

After gathering the material (which is a never-ending trip), I start playing in photoshop with all of what I have – making all these foreign-to-one-another elements sit nicely together, and tell the story that I saw in my mind.

I wanted to gather the Knowles, beauty, and visual language of the botanical scientific illustrations with the digital character I created, along with other strong elements like the specially crafted backgrounds and the objects they hold.

I wanted to express the invitation to their world in a way you would fall in love with them and then fall in love deeper with plants.

All this “mixture” has to simmer to an image where all the sims look and feel natural, although they are surreal.

I had to make 154 kinds of unique, tailored backgrounds (all the patterns are wallpaper patterns created especially for the mermaids) to work with 165 hairstyles, 63 Medicinal plants and 117 tails, 71 eyes, and over 60 kinds of torsos. And then came endless hours of understanding how to make all the layers be equally elegant and interesting in every single combination of NFT generated. This project took me almost a year to compose, and it evolved so many times during this year.

Unlike other projects of illustration where you have to create one image to stand by itself, here I dealt with a new field, yet a very familiar one –a huge digital collage made by me and by the algorithm. I had to teach myself what the algorithm needs to shine out – as many inner elements as possible – as many small digital collages that, in the end, look like a tribe but still vary enough.

Today We have a mission and a role; we must take care of mother earth and her children, which are us, plants, corals, wild cats, and jackals. We must be the change, I wish these mermaids carry the change, be the love this earth and planet need so much.
